Lady Honor Debt The Baxendale Sisters The Baxendale Sisters Series Book 1 edition by Maggi Andersen Literature Fiction eBooks

There were some parts I did not like in the book - Honor was left on her own too many times to be believable. She came from a scandalous past and all the more reason for her to be more guarded by her family. I understand her stepfather was desperate but its the principal of society at that time.

The ending seemed a bit rush and Edward threw caution to the wind and propriety be damned.

Though Honor and Edward were likable characters I don't really see how they fell in love as the book happened pretty fast and considering he barely remembered her from their last meeting, I don't know what was different about her this time around. They did focus on looks a lot though. Personalities came second.

The book did have potential and I might pick up Faith's story when it comes out and give this author another try.

Lady Honor Debt The Baxendale Sisters The Baxendale Sisters Series Book 1 edition by Maggi Andersen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I had no expectations of this book because it was a free download. I'd read and enjoyed 'The Seduction of Lady Charity" and so I took a chance on this one. I'm glad I did as it's a short and sweet read - it's also almost clean except for some bizarre lines near the end. I really wondered why the author even bothered writing them when she faded to gray anyway. Still nice story about the h, who is the oldest of the 5 girls and although this book is part of the Baxendale series, she isn't a Baxendale. Her father died and her mother remarried. During her first season she had an unfortunate encounter with a rake and she's no longer interested in marriage. Her stepfather is now having financial difficulties and she's devised a way of getting money for him. The stepfather is an idiot and I've no idea why she wanted to help him. He schemes to marry the h off to a perverted older Duke. The h seeks the H for some help in tracking down the man who swindled her father out of his fortune. The H is a younger son with no real prospects so he works as a solicitor. He was lovely and honourable and also had no intention of marrying because his heart was broken years before. The main characters meet as they are neighbours in the country. I loved the fact that the author used a light hand with both main characters and their former miseries didn't define them. It's short and sweet so there's no real deep character development but rather a charming romance.

+++Spoilers+++
For those who care and want to know about the h's past - it isn't at all bad and not as bad as we're led to believe. Read it - it's free.
The best thing I can say about this was that it didn't make me mad. It struck me as the writing version of paint-by-numbers.

Honor's father committed suicide after being cheated of his entire estate by an unscrupulous gambler. Why did the father put everything, including the home, on the line? Compulsive gambler, I guess. Now Honor has a plan to recoup the family fortune ~ she's going to play cards with the same dishonest gambler. Well, surprise, surprise, he cheats her too. So now, I've decided the father may not have been a compulsive gambler, after all. Just stupid. And so is Honor. Her family ends up shipping her off to an aunt in Northumberland.

Her compadre, Edward, is a younger son, a solicitor who has reluctantly been helping Honor with her hare-brained gambling notion. He now has a very rare opportunity to step up a few rungs on the ladder of success, presumably to barrister, but it will first require completion of a difficult case. He's wanted this opportunity for years, so what does he do? Drops work on the case and chases off after Honor in Northumberland. Like she won't still be there two weeks later after his work is complete. I suppose this was to show us that he really, really loves her.

Lots of dresses and balls, not much development of the characters and their romance.

I gave this 3 stars only because it was nice mindless entertainment for a couple of hours. I didn't want to actually think for a while)

Enjoy your reading! )
I truly liked this story. It wasn't too long or too short. Honor and Edward are neighbors and they know of each other. Edward is a solicitor who wants to establish himself before he gets married. Honor was once embroiled in a truly frightening experience. But she recovered. Her step-father wants her to marry the duke that has been sniffing around her. Honor is not amused. When they are at his estate, the duke takes Honor and a few other out the the grotto on the estate. Edward who has joined them and her sister Faith are on the beach along with Mr. Warne (who we meet again in Faith's story) to gather seashells. But it is too breezy so they go back to the grotto where the duke is climbing out of the water. Honor pushed him when he made inappropriate comments to her. Needless to say the duke didn't make an offer. Everyone returns to their homes and Honor's step-father has agreed to a season for Faith. Honor will accompany them. When Honor goes to Edward's office she asks him to help her with something. He does help her and even gives her the money for her jewels instead of pawning them. He's not so sure about her reasons for wanting the money but finds out when she goes to the gambling den. Any way, the person who ruined Honor's father is who she wants to ruin. But he seems to recognize Honor and insults her and then cheats. Everyone at the establishment knows about it after another gentleman accuses him of it. Honor has lost about half her money but she leaves the establishment and goes back the ball where her step-father is waiting for her. He says she has disgraced herself and sends her off to his sister's place in Northumberland. Honor is very sad her aunt isn't very good company. And there is no place in the village for young people. Edward follows her to tell her that he loves her and wishes to marry her. Alls well that ends well.
There were some parts I did not like in the book - Honor was left on her own too many times to be believable. She came from a scandalous past and all the more reason for her to be more guarded by her family. I understand her stepfather was desperate but its the principal of society at that time.
