Earlier that day, twenty six years old Mod Magazine entertainment editor Claire Reilly interviewed movie star Cole Brannon. Soon afterward, she goes home to find her live-in boyfriend Tom sleeping with another woman. She throws the womanizing moocher out of her home, but is upset so decides to get drunk on tequila shots.
Cole happens to be at the bar too and listens to Claire's tale of woe. After she consumes too much alcohol, Cole insures she gets home safely and if Tom remains there he will kick him out. The editor and the film hunk make love. However, Claire's enemy at Mod, beauty and fashion director Sidra DeSimon informs the tabloids that Claire and Cole are an entry and writes an article on that one night stand under Claire's name. Cole feels betrayed until a gala confrontation between the two editors seems heading to a vicious cat fight.
HOW TO SLEEP WITH A MOVIE STAR is a lighthearted chick lit romp starring a nice, perhaps too nice, Cole and a too bubbly even when depressed Claire. The story line focuses on Claire's skirmishes with the ever mean spirited Sidra with Cole being a side skirmish in this eternal conflict. In spite of stereotyping, sub-genre readers will appreciate this battle of the female gladiators as they war over editorial supremacy with the winner obtaining a fine prize, Cole.

When Claire Reilly, senior celebrity editor of Mod magazine, is given the assignment to write an article entitled "10 Reasons to Have a One-Night Stand" she thinks it will be the hardest thing she'll have to do. How is someone who can't even get her live-in boyfriend to make love to her for the last 29 days (and counting) supposed to be knowledgeable on such a subject?
A better person for the job would have been her co-worker and best friend, Wendy who was to sexual liberation what Manolo Blahnik was to shoes. A much easier assignment should be her next one...interviewing Cole Brannon the hottest male celebrity. Little does she know it will turn her life up side down.
In an amazingly short space of time, Claire's previously nearly-content existence is tossed into turmoil by her cheating (now ex-) boyfriend and her editor Sidra, the catty leader of Mod's fashion department "Triplets." Sidra has a hot jealous streak toward Claire's career success coming at such an early age. Of course she's also delusional and trying to convince everyone that she and George Clooney had "a thing."
And then there's Cole. His down-home boyish charm strikes an immediate chord in Claire that she's determined to ignore.
She's a professional after all and above getting involved with the celebrities she interviews. According to the tabloids and the mouth of his own publicist he's the closest thing to a modern-day Casanova.
Her opinions and emotional tug-of-war soon take a backseat when she finds her name splashed across the headlines as Cole's latest paramour. Claire is now fighting for her reputation, her livelihood, and possibly more as she finds what it's like to be on the receiving end of the media's rumor mill.
Kristin Harmel is no stranger to the worlds of magazine publishing or celebrity journalism. In her debut novel, How to Sleep with a Movie Star, she takes the knowledge she's garnered through her professional experiences and turns it into a fictional "what if?"
The dialogue and narration alike are sharp, witty, and oftentimes laugh-out-loud amusing. Characters provide three-dimensional entertainment, making them vary from easily relatable to wildly pathetic and even fun-to-hate. While the story is not a completely original one, Harmel gives it a lively and refreshing voice, making it stand out in the crowd.
This book was an easy read. I enjoyed it, but it was definitely pretty typical of a chick lit book. It didn't overly wow me, yet I didn't hate it. The plot was definitely a bit unbelievable at times though (she thinks she's an ugly duckling, yet a movie star falls for her...she thinks she's going to get fired, yet she gets a $10,000 raise...etc). I also thought the ending seemed a bit rushed.. As I was finishing the book, I felt like the book was trying to hurry up and make everyone have a happy ending and tie all the loose ends together in as few additional pages as possible. That being said, it was a light fluff read, and I pick up books like this mostly for that reason. I didn't want to get into another heavy book quite yet, and wanted something easy and fun to read. It definitely was easy and fun, and I compare it to cheesy chick flicks. They might not have Oscar buzz, and I might be embarrassed sometimes to admit I want to see the movie, but I secretly enjoy it, and need some light, cheesy movies sprinkled in between the heavy, thought-provoking movies or else I'll go crazy or become too serious. This was a fun, feel-good chick flick of a book.
Loved it. Shows that good girls come in first. Showed that morals always win over the wicked. Would definitely recommend this feel good book.
This was a good quick read but a little too predictable. It reminded me of the Devil Wears Prada meets How to Lose a guy in 10 Days mixed with fan-fiction.
Book arrived promptly. It's a good light read with a glass of wine or at the beach. The main character was easy to follow and I liked the character development. Would recommend this to a friend.
I will not go into details about the contents of the book as I think they are already well documented but from page 1 this book was a page turner. Great storyline, so many moments when you can't stop yourself from laughing out loud. This book hits all the right moments and the ending is a blast. My only complaint is that it did not last longer because as I neared the end I really did not want to finish it as it was just that good. Recommend it and can't wait for this author's next book.
