The Woman Left Behind A Novel Linda Howard 9780062419019 Books

I had expectations of this book thanks to its title and even the blurb and they were not met. the story is OKAY but its not great. There is enough sexual/platonic tension between the characters to want to keep reading but not enough to really get invested. I feel like this book should be renamed "GI Tech Support Jane" or something like that because two thirds of the book is about a woman enduring bootcamp and other types of training to make the team of an exclusive unit so she could provide tech support out in the field. When the title really comes into play, the drama of being "left behind" lasts for about 10 pages. There is a shadow of romance and a good amount of angst and sexual tension but not enough to drive the story to where it wants to go. The Price point is too high for this book.

The Woman Left Behind A Novel Linda Howard 9780062419019 Books Reviews

I’m a huge fan of Linda Howard’s books and she is an automatic buy for me. I was really drawn into this story from the very first page and didn’t want to put it down. I loved the two main characters, Jina Modell and Levi Butcher, and I really liked the secondary characters on the Go-Team as well. Jina had so much grit and determination, yet she was believable and had me laughing, crying, and pulling for her throughout the whole book. Levi is one of my favorite of Linda Howard’s alpha heroes. I absolutely loved him! The romance between Jina and Levi was a slow burn and my only complaint is that the book ended a little too soon. I wanted more of the love story between Jina and Levi. I didn’t get enough of them being together as a couple, although I did love the slow build up of their relationship. Great book! I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
I love Linda Howard's writing style. I always find her writing style engaging which is why I was easily able to finish the book but the plot line was less than mediocre. I kept waiting for something to get more intriguing, complex or even comedic, but it never did. The majority of the book was spent on Jina's "team" training which was lackluster, poorly researched and added no depth to the character. The action didn't start until the end of the book, was quickly over and trivial at best. For me, this book was the equivalent of a Harlequin romance rather than the sophisticated work she usually produces.
I always like Linda Howard books and this one sounded great, with an interesting plot, but after finishing it I was underwhelmed. It had a lot of potentials and started out like other great books she has written but then just fell short. There should have been more to the story when she was left behind, and then the romance that FINALLY came between the two major characters. I finished it and it was a light read but doesn't stand up to her earlier books.
I really enjoyed this book until the last chapter and 1/2. It built the characters slowly and carefully. They were very well done. The plot was also built up carefully. Then the last couple of chapters were rushed and incomplete. Loose ends were dangling every where. Parts were not explained that the plot had been based on. I wish I could recommend this book but I was so disappointed that I can't.
I loved this book, and I tried to read it slowly but I failed miserably. I just wanted to keep reading. I don't try to be overly analytical about a book, but I try to just let the story take me away. This one did, and I miss the characters already. I wish there were about 500 more pages to the book. Thank you, Linda, for the entertainment. Keep them coming! (Hopefully very close together!!!)
Full disclosure, I am a huge Linda Howard Fan. She is an automatic pre-order that I usually read the night of release. I really enjoyed Ms. Howard's latest book. There wasn't as much romance as some of her earlier books, but I felt she really achieved the slow burn of the relationship of the main characters. I really liked Jina as a character. She was a fish out of water for parts of the story, but I did not find her whiny or helpless. She was tough and capable, but without being unrealistic. I appreciated that she wasn't excellent at everything, her strength came from her grit and determination. I did not find her to be a stereotypical Mary Sue type character. I really liked Levi too. He was a typical alpha male character, but he was never a jerk or over the top. Levi was written in a way that made him sexy without being immature, with a few moments that were enough to make this reader swoon. However, the focus of the story was about Jina's journey.

Relatively Vague Spoilers

At the climax of the story, I understood Levi's actions and motivations completely and he made the correct call even though it was the hard call. I also completely understood Jina's heartache concerning his decision, even when she acknowledged that it was the right call. Knowing that it logically was the correct call does not mean that a person's emotions are ready to accept that logic. Overall, it was a really quick read that I finished in one night.

Those who are fans of Ms.Howard's earlier books may be a bit disappointed that it is not more of a straight romance novel like her earlier books (Mackenize's Mountain, Shades of Twilight, Sarah's Child, Now You See Her), but this book follows her more recent offerings (All the Queen's Men, Troublemaker, Shadow Women, Cover of Night). So while her writing style has changed over the years, Ms. Howard still remains an automatic buy for this reader and I will impatiently be waiting for her next offering.
This is similar to some of her earlier books so it's not bad. The first 70% of the book is devoted to things like stinky socks, jet lag, overviews of missions boots and mud. The last 30% is where the action is. So if you want a good read go for Open Season, the MacKenzies or All the Queens Men. It feels like her heart isn't in it anymore. The formula is there but it's all been there before in her old books - only with more action and feeling. If you must read this do yourself a favor and wait until the price drops or get it from the library.
