Characters are very well developed but what got me most was the randomness of the evil on a lark and the repercussions it causes over time. No one is safe from life. Some of the scenes are truly heart rending and evoke strong emotions. Rather like the butterfly effect, you never know the ramifications of acts. I particularly liked the last two pages that just faded and left you to ponder... Is there really any justice, fairness or forgiveness? There certainly is no security (or a benevolent, loving god). Powerful writing.

I really loved this book! It kept me interested the entire time. Fossum's characters are always very complex and intriguing. I do wish she would elaborate a little on the main character of Sejer a little more. But overall, I found this book to be a fascinating mystery. I highly recommend all her books. The writing is excellent and the plots will definitely keep you reading late into the night!
Norway's Karin Fossum is one of my most favorite authors. She writes about things that interest me, and she writes in a way that is close to perfect for my taste. I do not care much about plot, and do not need fast action. Ms. Fossum writes about Little Things That Are Important In Life, and she writes about them beautifully.

"The Caller" is another lovely, little, quiet book, where seemingly nothing much extraordinary happens for the most part. And yet, people get sick, divorce, and die, because of little things happening. "The Caller" is not a masterpiece, like "Black Seconds" or "The Indian Bride", but I still loved reading this short book.

"The Caller" is another book in the series featuring detectives Sejer and Skarre. I do not like series much, because at some point they become minor rewrites of the same book. But when one ignores the two detectives, Ms. Fossum's incisive, mature, and compassionate observations of people's behavior and motivations are the real value of her books. And her wonderfully simple writing.
This book was not up to the standard I expect from Ms Fossum because I could not buy into the premises that she presented I.e. That people's lives could be so thrown by what occurred to them either by the action of the tormentor or that this tormentor would be so evil due to parental neglect. That having been said the conclusion to the book was also a bit of a stretch for me and so all in all I did not like this as much as I have her other books.
I'm afraid I do not enjoy this type of book. We read it at my book club and we all agreed it had the typical 'scandinavian' darkness to it and complex psychological twists. As a mystery/detective novel it fell far short of others of its genre. The crime was not developed or the investigation analyzed as in some other crime novels. I could not find one sympathetic or likable character, and even the ones I liked, such as Else or the adopted grandson, very little was explained about them. I know that other readers will not agree with me, but as I said at the beginning this is not the kind of book I enjoy. To each his own taste.
For a change of pace, there wasn't a lot of gory, torture and murder in this story, although there was death. The death in this story, when it came, was more affecting than the murders of a crazed serial killer on the loose. The "torture" in this story was psychological. This is one of the first stories I've read where the reader can really almost feel some empathy for the criminal-protagonist. One can't condone what he does, of course, but the author deftly writes the reader into the boy's pain and we can at least understand the reasons for his anger at society - the world - his life. And then there's the most horrific "crime" in the story. But was it a crime? We're left with a few unanswered questions at the end of this book. However, I did not feel cheated. Instead, it gives one "food for thought." The story's impact is much stronger than a neat & tidy, all-questions-answered ending. The author lets you draw your own conclusions. I look forward to reading more by Karin Fossum.
Scandinavian mysteries have similar characteristics and some are present in this book; taciturn people, the importance of the landscape, a dark view of peoples' motives, the importance of small uncovered details. The plot is convoluted in a good way, almost unsettling. The characters are interesting and fairly well developed. Yet, somehow this book is not as compelling as some of the other Scandinavian mysteries. This is probably purely a matter of personal taste of the reviewer who is a rabid Detective Wallander fan.
I've read almost all of Karin Fossum's books and enjoyed each until this one. Until I accessed to write this review, I had no understanding that this book was a joint authorship instead of the other person being a translator. The book I purchased had only her name as the author.

I admit that I don't enjoy books which seem to be more prevalent lately where every other chapter is about what's "going on" with the "villain". I still like the who-done-its not the "how-do-they-catch-thems"...

That didn't contribute to my low rating however. I found this book almost on the sick side per being about someone doing gruesome acts to total strangers. I found the book far too graphic and depressing in concept. Per anyone else who might find the same objections - were this their first book by Fossum, I would expect them never to read another. Sadly, I am doubtful that I would buy another per this author going so far so fast in this direction.
