Honestly, I could barely bring myself to finish this book, but I persevered so that I could write an honest review after I figured out how to explain what exactly is wrong with this thing.Yeah, there's preaching, & a Christian will recognize the truth in the lesson. The description includes a reference to the Christian theme of forgiveness, so don't go complaining about thinking the story was about anything other than what it is. Unfortunately, the lesson is lost in the lack of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, which forced Kelly to revert to over-the-top preaching which even most Christians would find over-zealous. (Actually, as a Christian, I found myself laughing at a few things...some of the other reviewers do a great job explaining why, so I won't take up any more of your time with that here.)
The characters are shallow, childish, immature...fill in what you will. I just didn't buy it. Really, I wanted to like Lady Netta, but she just annoyed the snot out of me. I couldn't figure out her angle, her motives for doing or saying almost anything. Her thoughts revealed little, & Kelly didn't seem too interested in filling in the blanks. Now Tahn Dorn is an interesting character, & I really would've loved to have seen him less insecure...because, I mean, really, the guy is a studly manly man, no doubt about it. Nothing doing. He blows hot & cold, & again, the main issue for me is that I could not wrap my brain around his motivation for, well, anything. I could speculate about both characters 'til the cows come home, but it isn't the same, & even reaching the tale's conclusion wouldn't have told me if I was right or not. And then, to make it all worse, new characters & perspectives were added more than half-way into the book! I actually stopped reading to whine to my husband.
Now here's the truly disappointing part of it all. The story is GOOD. I mean, the plot is really creative, the characters are appropriate, the setting is attractive, & the goal (or lesson, if you will) is relevant. Kelly had a great idea here, but it was sadly overshadowed by inexperience or lack of skill. I can honestly say I'm disappointed to have to rate this book so poorly, & that is because the story is GOOD. The promise of adventure & romance & sadness & healing & everything that makes a story touch someone's heart...it's all here. It's just bogged down by weak characters with poor dialogue &, well, more weak descriptions.
I guess that kind of sums it up in a word. Weak. 2 stars.

I downloaded this book, like others, because I was looking for a good free fantasy and this one had initially good reviews. The cover is very misleading. I assumed I would be reading a medieval fantasy story involving a cool sword. Instead, I found myself reading a pseudo-romance Christian piece of fiction that just happens to be set in a medieval world. Again like others, I found the first half of the book better than average. But, about halfway in, the story slowed down and became so predictable. I've been trying to slog through now for over a week. And this is from a person who normally can read a book in three days.
As a matter of full disclosure, I happen to be a relatively devout Christian and even I found the thickly laid on Christian dialogue distracting. There are better and more creative ways to introduce Christian themes into books than bare explication of Scripture and the Gospel into the dialogue! Seriously, if I wanted an explanation of the Gospel, I would read a non-fiction book. I don't need a fictional character's version of a conversion experience.
On the other hand, Kelly's writing is not bad. And I must admit, like another review, the character of Tahn Dorn is intriguing. The only reason I an continuing to read this book is to get more of Tahn's history. And the only reason this book isn't getting two stars is because of the Tahn character.
I found the main premise of the story (a man lost in a life of violence, drugs, and murder finds his way to redemption by saving the one person he couldn't kill and rescuing the children he was supposed to train into his lifestyle) to be quite compelling. I loved the idea of the struggle, and the initial presentation of the Gospel and forgiveness; especially towards the middle of the book, as Tahn Dorn struggles with who he is, and his relationship with both his past and with God. Unfortunately, at a certain point in the book one can't turn the page without another virtually identical presentation of the Gospel as the page before. What started as a well reasoned story of forgiveness and redemption turns into an almost "in your face" sermon. I am a Pentecostal worship leader, and I found it to be over the top. I'd imagine for the unchurched it might seem to be even more so. Still, if you want to know the Gospel, if you think you're too far gone for redemption, this book makes it clear that the Gospel is for all men, even the worst among us, and in that the message is strong and clear.
I found the Tahn books while looking to see if a sequel had been written to The House On Malcolm Street. I was saddened to learn that the author and her son had died in a car accident. Thankfully, as you will see by reading any one of her books, she was a solid Christian looking forward to Heaven. So... with regard to the Tahn books... let me just say that by average, secular standards, I would likely be considered a "Jesus Freak." So take what I say with that knowledge. I, like one other reviewer, had a gut level, "Are you kidding me???" reaction to some of the "churchy" scenarios in the books (have read all three in the series). Even growing up in the church and being a Bible reading, praying, believer, I have to say that some moments were a bit much. But this is the thing... if you read Leisha Kelly, you just love the characters, the history, the vivid imagery. You know that she was all in with her faith. And you love the books, even if some moments are a bit corny or overy "Jesus Freak" for you. she was a good writer with a strong faith. Enjoy her books. All of them. By the time you get through all of them, you'll wish she was here to write more.
Honestly, I could barely bring myself to finish this book, but I persevered so that I could write an honest review after I figured out how to explain what exactly is wrong with this thing.
